The Corporation is formed for the charitable purposes of the promotion of knowledge and understanding of ethnicity, ethnic conflict, and nationalism studies broadly, with a particular geographic focus on Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe, Russia, Ukraine, the Caucasus, and Eurasia. It supports this knowledge and understanding through the sponsorship and organization of conventions, conferences, and symposia, alone and in collaboration with other organizations. It supports and promotes the scholarly work of academics and students by presenting awards in recognition of exceptional works of scholarship.
