Nonprofit Compensation by Sector
The IRS classifies nonprofits into sectors using the National Taxonomy of Exempt Entities, a system that groups organizations by their primary activity. A hospital, a food bank, and a symphony orchestra all file the same Form 990, but the compensation norms in each sector are very different.
Use these sector pages to explore how compensation varies across the nonprofit landscape. Each page lists every organization in that sector with sortable compensation data from IRS filings. There are currently 471,263 organizations across all sectors.
