Because firewood is rapidly becoming scarce, they burn other biomass such as crop waste, dried dung, and plastic trash. They inhale toxic smoke, which causes millions of deaths annually. Besides premature deaths, using wood as an energy source, together with population growth, is the root cause of the environmental crisis. Half of all extracted wood from the world's forests is used for cooking and heating. In Africa, it is the leading cause of deforestation. Many efforts have been made to solve the problem by introducing clean biomass-burning or solar-powered stoves.
