ORGANIZED IN RESPONSE TO THE CATASTROPHIC DEBRIS FLOW IN THE MONTECITO AREA ON JANUARY 9, 2018 THAT RESULTED IN THE LOSS OF 23 LIVES AS WELL AS DAMAGE AND/OR DESTRUCTION OF APPROXIMATELY 470 STRUCTURES, THE PROJECT FOR RESILIENT COMMUNITIES WAS ORGANIZED TO EVALUATE THE ON-GOING RISKS FROM FUTURE POTENTIAL DEBRIS FLOWS, TO RESEARCH AND IDENTIFY REASONABLE MEANS TO REDUCE THE RISKS AND/OR THE EFFECTS OF FUTURE DEBRIS FLOWS, AND TO OVERSEE THE INSTALLATION OF DEBRIS FLOW NETS TO HELP PROTECT THE MONTECITO COMMUNITY. THE ORGANIZATION IS ALSO CHARGED WITH THE ONGOING OVERSITE AND MAINTENANCE OF THE NETS, INCLUDING ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS, OVER THE NETS FIVE-YEAR PERMIT PERIOD.
