THE BELMONT HILLS FIRE COMPANY (BHFC) PROVIDES SAFETY EDUCATION, FIRST CLASS FIRE PROTECTION AND HEAVY RESCUE SERVICES TO THE BELMONT HILLS AND PENN VALLEY COMMUNITIES, AS WELL AS SERVING AS THE PRIMARY RESCUE UNIT FOR ALL OF LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP AND THE EIGHT MILE SECTION OF INTERSTATE 76 RUNNING THROUGH LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP. FROM ITS INCEPTION IN 1919 AS THE WEST MANAYUNK FIRE COMPANY (THE NAME WAS CHANGED IN 1960 TO REFLECT A CHANGE IN THE NAME OF THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY) THROUGH THE PRESENT DAY, BHFC HAS GROWN IN NUMBERS AND MODERNIZED ITS EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES TO MAKE SURE THAT IT CAN SEVE ITS COMMUNITY WITH THE BEST IN FIRE-FIGHTING AND RESCUE SERVICES. BHFC IS THE ONLY OFFICIAL RESCUE COMPANY LOCATED IN THE TOWNSHIP. WHILE IT IS AN INDEPENDENT ORGANIZATION, BHFC IS ALSO A MEMBER COMPANY OF LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP'S FIRE DEPARTMENT AND WAS FIRST RECOGNIZED AS A PART OF THAT DEPARTMENT IN 1920.
